Ilias A. Voulgarakis (1927–1999) was born in Patras, in the Peloponnese. He completed his undergraduate studies in theology in Athens, and his postgraduate studies in Münster (Germany) and Lille (France), where he earned a master's degree in theology in the field of sociology and pedagogy.

He continued his specialization in the field of the mission of the Church, opening new horizons of contemporary Greek theological thought in the final decades of the twentieth century. Through his work as a professor of the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens, he marked an entire epoch in the service of research theology and the living tradition of the Church, to which he devoted himself until the end of his life.

His research in the field of Byzantine and, especially, patristic literature is distinguished by exceptional depth, comprehensiveness and originality.

Slander is the offspring of hatred. It is a subtle and yet grave illness, a hidden and insidious leech that sucks and weakens the blood of love. Slander is hypocrisy, a cause of the defilement and burdening of the conscience, the destruction of purity… I have known some who, secretly and hidden from the world, committed the gravest sins; yet, considering themselves pure, they harshly attacked those who openly fall into lesser sins.Св. Јован Лествичник
People have ceased to weep over their own sins, they have seized judgment from the Son of God and, as if sinless, judge and condemn one another. Heaven is appalled and the earth trembles at this. They, however, being unfeeling, are not even ashamed.Св. Максим Исповедник
